This Chocolate Mousse Has 18g of Protein—and You’d Never Guess the Secret Ingredient

If you told me a few years ago that cottage cheese could turn into a chocolate dessert I’d actually want to eat, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

But here we are.

This double chocolate cottage cheese mousse is rich, creamy, packed with protein, and takes just a few minutes to throw together. And somehow, the cottage cheese completely disappears into the background.

What you get instead is a smooth, chocolatey dessert that feels much more indulgent than the ingredient list suggests.

And no, you don’t need heavy cream or a complicated recipe.

Just blend, melt, mix, chill, and eat.

Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Mousse

It’s high in protein

Each serving gives you around 18 grams of protein, thanks mainly to the cottage cheese.

So while this definitely tastes like dessert, it can also work as a quick protein-rich snack when you’re craving something sweet.

It tastes like chocolate

There are two layers of chocolate here.

Cocoa powder gives the mousse that deep, slightly bitter chocolate flavor, while melted chocolate adds richness and makes the whole thing taste much more like an actual dessert.

Basically, we’re not playing around with the chocolate.

It’s ridiculously easy

You need a blender or food processor and a handful of ingredients.

No baking.

No complicated techniques.

No standing in the kitchen wondering what you’re supposed to do next.

Ingredients

Cottage cheese. This is the secret behind the whole thing. Full-fat cottage cheese gives you a richer, creamier mousse, while low-fat cottage cheese creates a slightly lighter texture. Both work.

Cocoa powder. Use unsweetened cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor. It also helps give the mousse that classic dark chocolate color.

Chocolate chips. These add another layer of chocolate and make the mousse richer and smoother. Use your favorite chocolate chips or chopped chocolate.

Vanilla extract. A little vanilla helps round out the chocolate flavor and makes the dessert taste more balanced.

Maple syrup. This is optional. The chocolate and cottage cheese aren’t overly sweet on their own, so add a tablespoon or two if you prefer a sweeter mousse.

How To Make Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse

1. Blend the cottage cheese

Add the cottage cheese, cocoa powder and vanilla extract to a high-speed blender or food processor.

Blend until completely smooth, scraping down the sides as needed.

Don’t rush this part.

You want the cottage cheese to become silky smooth, not slightly grainy.

2. Melt the chocolate

Add your chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each one until melted.

Keep an eye on it because burnt chocolate is surprisingly easy to create.

If there are a few tiny pieces left, keep stirring. The residual heat will usually finish melting them.

3. Add the chocolate

Pour the melted chocolate into the blender or food processor.

Blend again until everything is completely combined and creamy.

If you’re using maple syrup, add it here as well.

4. Chill

Divide the mousse between two small containers or jars.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

You can technically eat it immediately, but chilling gives the mousse time to firm up and develop that thick, creamy texture we’re looking for.

5. Add your toppings

Top with a little Greek yogurt, shaved chocolate or mini chocolate chips.

Or don’t.

It’s your mousse.

A Few Tips

Use good cottage cheese. The cottage cheese you use can make a noticeable difference in the final texture. Look for a thick, creamy variety. If there’s a lot of liquid sitting on top, drain it before blending.

Blend until completely smooth. This is probably the most important step. Give it enough time for the cottage cheese to lose its grainy texture.

Don’t skip the chilling time. The mousse gets thicker and better as it sits in the refrigerator.

Adjust the sweetness. If you’re using unsweetened cocoa and dark chocolate, you may want a little maple syrup. If you’re using sweeter chocolate chips, you might not need any.

Make It Your Own

Once you’ve got the basic recipe down, there are plenty of ways to change it.

Peanut Butter Chocolate

Add a spoonful of peanut butter before blending.

Chocolate and peanut butter. There really isn’t much more to say.

Chocolate Berry

Add a few fresh berries on top before serving.

The slight tartness works really well with the rich chocolate.

Extra Chocolate

Add chocolate shavings and mini chocolate chips on top.

Because apparently two layers of chocolate weren’t enough.

How To Store It

Store the mousse covered in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.

It’s actually a great meal-prep dessert because you can divide it into individual jars and simply grab one whenever the chocolate craving shows up.

You can also freeze it for up to 2 months, although the texture will change and become more ice-cream-like once frozen and thawed.

For the best texture, let it thaw in the refrigerator.

The Bottom Line

This is one of those recipes where the ingredient list doesn’t really prepare you for the final result.

Cottage cheese turns into a smooth, creamy chocolate mousse, and you end up with a dessert that tastes far more indulgent than it actually is.

It’s quick, high in protein, easy to meal prep, and most importantly…

you really can’t taste the cottage cheese.
