Easy Taco Bowls: Crispy Tortilla Bowls With Seasoned Ground Beef and Melted Cheese

I don’t know about you, but I will never turn down a good taco.

But sometimes you want the taco experience without having to assemble a dozen little tacos while dinner slowly turns into a construction project.

Enter these easy taco bowls.

Instead of using a regular taco shell, you turn soft flour tortillas into crispy little bowls, fill them with seasoned ground beef and melted cheese, then pile on your favorite toppings.

It’s basically a taco that decided it wanted a bowl.

And honestly, I’m not mad about it.

Why You’ll Love These Taco Bowls

These taco bowls are one of those dinners that look much more impressive than the amount of effort they actually require.

The tortilla bowls get crisp and golden in the oven, while the taco meat brings all the savory, seasoned goodness you’d expect.

Then comes the cheese.

And then, because we’re adults and nobody can stop us, more cheese.

Once the bowls are baked, you can dress them up however you like with your favorite taco toppings.

It’s easy, customizable and perfect for a quick family dinner.

How To Make Taco Bowls

The process is surprisingly simple.

1. Cook The Taco Meat

Start with ground beef in a skillet.

Season it with a little salt and pepper, then cook until there is no pink remaining.

Add your favorite taco seasoning along with a small amount of water and let everything cook together for another couple of minutes.

That’s your taco meat done.

Easy.

2. Turn Your Tortillas Into Bowls

Take your flour tortillas and shape them into bowls using an oven-safe bowl, tortilla bowl mold or another method that allows the tortilla to hold its shape.

Bake for a few minutes until the tortillas become firm and crispy enough to hold the filling.

This is the part where a regular tortilla has its little career change.

3. Add The Cheese And Taco Meat

Once your tortilla bowls are ready, add a layer of shredded cheese.

Then spoon in the seasoned taco meat.

And yes, add another layer of cheese on top.

We are not here to be shy about cheese.

4. Bake Until The Cheese Melts

Put the filled taco bowls back into the oven and bake until the cheese is completely melted and bubbling.

You want the tortilla shell crisp and the cheese hot and gooey.

5. Dress Them Up

Now comes the fun part.

Add your favorite taco toppings and serve immediately.

Try:

  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Salsa
  • Sour cream
  • Guacamole
  • Jalapeños
  • Diced onions
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Extra cheese

There really isn’t a wrong answer here.

What Makes A Good Taco Bowl?

The tortilla is doing a lot of work in this recipe.

You want a flour tortilla that’s flexible enough to shape into a bowl but sturdy enough to crisp up in the oven without falling apart.

Once baked, it gives you that crunchy texture while still tasting like the soft flour tortilla you’d expect in a fajita or taco.

The result is the best of both worlds: crispy on the outside, loaded with taco goodness on the inside.

Make These Taco Bowls Your Own

Ground beef is the easiest option, but you don’t have to stop there.

Try swapping it for:

  • Ground turkey
  • Shredded chicken
  • Steak
  • Black beans
  • Pinto beans

You can also change the cheese or toppings depending on what you have in the refrigerator.

And that’s one of the reasons taco bowls are such a useful weeknight dinner.

Nobody has to agree on exactly the same toppings.

Build your own bowl and everybody’s happy.

A Weeknight Dinner That Actually Feels Fun

There is something about eating dinner out of a crispy tortilla bowl that makes an ordinary taco night feel a little more exciting.

You still get the seasoned meat, melted cheese and toppings you love, but the presentation makes the whole thing feel like something different.

And because everything comes together in the oven, you aren’t standing over the stove assembling individual tacos all night.

Less work.

More tacos.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Final Thoughts

These easy taco bowls are proof that you don’t need a complicated recipe to make dinner interesting.

Cook the beef, shape and crisp the tortillas, add cheese and taco meat, melt everything together, then pile on your favorite toppings.

That’s basically it.

The only difficult part is deciding how much cheese counts as “enough.”

Personally, I don’t believe we’ve discovered the upper limit yet.
